Demonstrative adjectives 


Demonstrative adjectives are use to indicate an object or a person in a phrase. They have the same gender and number as the noun to which they refer.

Questo cane è bianco —> this dog is white 


Queste bottiglie sono di vetro —> these bottles are made of glass 


Quei soldati sono coraggiosi —> that soldiers are brave 


Quel ristorante fa una buona lasagna —> that restaurant has a good lasagna 



The demonstrative adjectives ( questo , questa , questi , queste ) indicate something close to the person who is speaking. In front of a vowel you write them as “ quest’ ”.


Ex. 


Quest’ aquila è così elegante —> this eagle is so elegant.

Quest’ orologio è di mio nonno —> this watch is of my grandfather 


There are some time that the adjective “ questa ” is written as sta- with the word , to indicate “ this ”.

Ex.


Stamattina or questa mattina —> this morning 

Stasera or questa sera —> this evening

Stanotte or questa notte —> this night or tonight 

Stavolta or questa volta —> this time 


The demonstrative adjectives ( quello, quella , quelle , quei , quegli ) indicate something far away to the person who is speaking. “ Quello " and “ quella ” become “ quell’ ” in front of a noun starting with a vowel.

Demonstrative adjectives are repeated before each noun. 

To highlight more the difference between this and that or these and those , the words “ qui ”, “ qua ” = ( here ) and “ là ”, “ lì ” = ( there ) follow the noun 


Ex. 

Ti piace di questa macchina o quella lì ? —> Do you like more this car or that one ?
